Bill Clinton on Rebuilding Rwanda

Bill Clinton left office determined to continue his life of service. His William J. Clinton Foundation is focused on four critical areas: health security, with an emphasis on HIV/AIDS; economic empowerment; leadership development and citizen service; and racial, ethnic and religious reconciliation. Foundation projects include working with pharmaceutical companies to lower the costs of medicines to needy areas, and, through his Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI), developing an innovative health care system that can be successful and sustainable throughout the developing world. HisClinton Global Initiative brings brings together world leaders to discuss the world's most pressing challenges.

Discussion questions before you watch the Clinton lecture:

1.       What do you imagine a former president can do bring about peace and social justice?

2.       How do you think poverty impacts efforts to create social justice?

3.       Why would someone want to improve both agriculture and health care in order to create a more peaceful society?

Discussion questions after you watch the Clinton lecture:

1.       This talk begins with a claim that the world is currently independent, but unequal.  What are some of the specific examples of inequality given? How do you think inequalities contribute to instability in the world?

2.       Bill Clinton discusses several ways the world is becoming more integrated through democracy, non-governmental organizations, and the Internet.  Which one of these integrations seems the most important to you?  Why might the others be important as well?

3.       This talk includes many specific examples of the problems faced by the Clinton Foundation when they wanted to improve health care in Rwanda, as well as the specific results they obtained.  Name some of the specific problems and results.  What does he mean by "sustainable" results? Why do you think he chose these examples to inspire people in the United States?

4.       Bill Clinton emphasizes that reliable systems can make interdependence in local communities more effective.  What does he mean by a "system"?  How might new systems help us form just and peaceful communities?
