ON-LINE LECTURES and DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
First-Year Experience 2009
How can we create a more peaceful and just world?
Perhaps we can answer this question by examining how leaders in a variety of disciplines - education, journalism, psychology, spirituality and religion, political science, economics, environmental science, and technology – address the topic of peace and justice.
All lectures are approximately 20 minutes long and can be found at www.ted.com.
Here are some hints for effective discussion based on these videos:
1. Jot down some responses to the pre-lecture questions before you play the video.
2. Watch each lecture twice, or use the interactive transcript window (on the right side of the screen) to see what the author is saying. Reading and watching will increase your comprehension of the lecture.
3. Take some brief notes while you are watching so that you can go back and review what was new to you or most intriguing.
4. Type your discussion post in a word processor so that you can edit and save it before posting.
5. Put specific information in your discussion post such as your reactions to new information you learned from the lecture, examples given by the speaker, and parallels from your own experience.
